Backpacking 97!The lack of any nearby nice backpacking spots is the worst thing about living in Houston. I've really tried hard to make sure I go backpacking. I did four trips in 1997.

Big Basin
|
I went on an overnight trip with my buddies Mike, Elissa, and Donna to Big Basin State park just north of Santa Cruz. Big Basin's big draw is Redwoods, it makes the park a little dark at times. That's OK, spending time among the huge trees makes up for it. The only downside is the park is crowded by backpacking standards, but we still had a great time! My apologies to Elissa, she's better at estimating how much food to take. |

The High Sierras |
In the same trip to California, David and I spent four nights in the High Sierras. Our goal was a place called evolution basin. The bottom of the basin is near 12,000 feet and the surrounding mountains are at or near 14,000 feet. I wasn't impressed. By the time we got there the temperatures were in the 40's with strong winds and an approaching storm. The high/low point of the trip was spending the night in a blizzard way above the tree line. All in all it was a wonderful trip. |

By Myself in the
|
I've been backpacking bunches of times, but always with other people. I wanted to try doing it alone and timing wise it worked out well for me to spend a night in the Guadalupe Mountains in West Texas by myself. It's more fun hiking with someone else, although if it's a question of backpacking alone and not backpacking, alone will win everytime. |
